Baptism is a symbol or illustration of what has already taken place as far as the believer is concerned. By being baptizing the believer is symbolically identified with Christ, whose death, burial, and resurrection was on his behalf.  They are publicly saying “Christ did all that was necessary for my salvation on the cross.   I believe with all my heart, and I am expressing it outwardly in the way he commanded.”. This ceremony is for any believer who has a clearly accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and has a willing ness to follow him. From what is mentioned in Scriptures (Matt 3:16, John 3:23, Acts 8:38-39) the first Christians were baptized by immersion, and therefore this is the model we follow today.
